Edited Notes

Multi-function device: Printer, Scanner, Copier.

Maximum paper size A4/Letter/Legal.

Printing engine of the Epson Stylus C83/C84.

Scanning should work with SANE using Epson's IScan or perhaps also with SANE's "epson" backend.

Copying should just work with the front panel of the device.

My old printer broke down, so i got a CX8400 as the replacement, looked here and nobody had
any luck apparently. So i tried my luck, and it appears like the new v5.1.3 version of the
CX5800 drivers print in color.
The scanner works if you use iscan:
http://lx1.avasys.jp/iscan/2.10.0/iscan-2.10.0-1.c2.i386.rpm
----------------------------------------------------
I had a *customer* order this printer based on the information in this entry.

We attempted to install and use this printer under Mandriva Spring Edition
2007.1. No joy. Even though CUPS detects it and appears to install a driver it
only spits out page after page of paper when trying to print. Also SANE does
not recognize the scanner. The built-in card reader appears to work and
printing pictures from a camera card works direct on the printer as advertised
by Epson. But since this is mainly to be used *as* a printer that is not good
enough.

Installation was tried both with Mandriva Control Center and via CUPS on
http://127.0.0.1:631/, neither worked to get a test page to print, just spitting
out page after page of paper. The drivers tried were those that come with the
Mandriva Spring Edition 2007.1 and those downloaded from
http://openprinting.org/download/printdriver/RPMS/i486/gutenprint-5.0.1-1lsb3.1.i486.rpm
after removing the drivers that come with the distribution. Also tried the
detected driver for CX8400 (first) then tried the " Printing engine of the Epson
Stylus C83/C84." suggestion from this page. No happiness.

If someone has this working I would like to know how. As of now the customer is
returning the printer and wants to exchange it for one that works. The problem
now is, can we trust this database? Quite a dilemma.

Selecting and using the Epson Stylus CX3810 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.1.3 works for this
printer as of September 2007. We had to download, extract, compile and install the
Gutenprint v5.1.3 release from Sourceforge first.

If that URL does not work for you then use http://avasys.jp/ and choose English at
the top of the page.

pipslite works as long as I try to print a testpage, but lpr does not. I get the file queued,
but then no joy; the printer does not seem to get the hint:

[root@localhost ~]# lpr .bashrc
[root@localhost ~]# lpq
epson is ready
Rank Owner Job File(s) Total Size
1st root 137 .bashrc 1024 bytes

I have the pipslite-cups rpm installed on my F7 system. Do I also need to install the pipslite rpm?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
pipslite doesn't even *build* on a Ubuntu 7.10 I'm working on (30 Apr 2008), and the avasys
website provide any advice on dependencies.
