The resolution of 600x600 dpi you get only in black and white. In colour the highest resolution is 600x300 dpi.
For basic printing functionality use the HPIJS driver . For advanced functionality such as printer status and maintenance features, use the HPLIP driver (which includes HPIJS).
The best printout quality you will probably get with the HPLIP driver, provided by HP.
Other drivers as Gimp-Print ("gimp-print"/"stp") or some of the "cdj..." work, too.
Use Gimp-Print for 600-dpi grayscale printing.
